| Most Popular Questions |
If I connect the VUDU box to my television through my VCR, can I record the movies? |
| No. Copyright laws prohibit you from recording movies from the VUDU box by any means. In fact, digital security technology integrated with the player may significantly impair the picture quality of VUDU movies if you plug the player into your television through a VCR or other electronic recording device—whether or not you are trying to copy movies. To avoid the possibility of problems, please connect your player directly to your television. |
| |
Will VUDU work wirelessly? |
| The VUDU box itself is not wireless, but you can plug the box into any number of Ethernet or game adapters to connect it to your wireless network. We recommend 802.11G minimum. Wireless performance may vary based on environmental factors specific to each home—distance from the router, building materials, and proximity to microwaves. Regardless of what sort of connection you use, VUDU requires a broadband Internet speed of 2.0 Mbps for instant viewing of movies. |
| |
Are adult titles available with the VUDU service? |
Do I pay a monthly fee? How does billing work? |
| There are no monthly fees. You pay for content as you go. Our billing functions in the following way: When setting up your account, you provide a credit card and choose an amount ($20, $50, or $100, with $20 being the default amount) to charge the card and create a positive balance in the account. As you rent or purchase movies, the per-movie viewing charges will be debited from your VUDU account. When your account depletes to $0.00, the pre-selected amount is charged to your credit card and the account is replenished. |
| |
What is the size of VUDU’s hard drive? |
| The VUDU box has a 250 GB hard drive. |
| |
Why is there a USB connector on the back of my VUDU box? |
| We designed your VUDU box to be flexible, able to adapt to the changes and improvements that we plan to make to our products and services in the future. For now, the USB port is idle. We will keep you updated on new VUDU features and services as they become available. |
| |
Does VUDU have high defintion (HD) content? |
| The VUDU hardware is capable of displaying up to true 1080p HD content as and when such content is made available on the service. |
| |
How much does VUDU cost? |
| The VUDU box costs $399.00. One-time movie rentals range from $.99 to $3.99. Purchased movies range from $4.99 to $19.99. This price for the hardware is comparable to consumer electronic devices built around a hard drive or to high-definition DVD players. The rental prices are competitive with video stores and VOD services. |

How does it compare with VOD services from cable providers? |
| Most VOD services from cable providers offer access to a limited number of movies, generally about 100 to 200 titles. Most are not considered recent releases. As a result, people who use VOD services are still likely to rent or purchase videos from traditional video stores. |
| |
Which operating system/what sort of software runs the VUDU box? |
| The VUDU box runs a specially designed, proprietary operating system. |
| |
How many movies are added every week? |
| 5 to 20 movies are added on a weekly basis. |
| |
Can I use the VUDU box and service in a different country? |
| No, not at this time. The VUDU service is only available in the 50 United States. |
| |
What are the key features of the VUDU box and service? |
• Pay as you go-no activation fees or subscription required.
• Capable of displaying full HD video. Upconverts standard definition to HD to maximize video and audio quality.
• Thousands of DVD-quality movies to rent or purchase-new releases and old favorites.
• Plays back movies instantly-no buffering, stuttering, or pixilation.
• Powerful search engine and fast, easy-to-use interface.
| |
What kind of Internet connection do I need to have? |
| Your Internet connection is vital to your VUDU experience. VUDU requires a minimum of 2.0 Mbps (usually advertised as 3 Mbps) for instant viewing. While a slower connection is sufficient for delayed viewing, 0.85 Mbps (1.5 advertised), we recommend upgrading to get the most out of VUDU. |
| |
How often does VUDU update movies and when does that happen? |
| VUDU will update content and software on a regular basis (weekly) at an off-hour. If you happen to be watching something at that time, the update will start once the box is idle so as to not interrupt your viewing session. |
| |
How does it compare with other stand-alone services in this category? |
| Most digital services deliver content to the PC or offer a limited number of movies for delayed viewing on the TV. We’re delivering thousands of titles to the living room that can be watched instantly on TV–more content than two typical video stores combined. We believe consumers want access to movies directly from their TV with a high ease-of-use. That is what VUDU delivers. |
| |
What’s included with the VUDU box? |
| You’ll find the following items in the VUDU shipping container: the VUDU Box, the VUDU remote, RF antenna, power supply & AC cord, HDMI cable, Ethernet cable, composite video with analog stereo audio cable, and Quick-start Guide. |
| |
What kind of remote control does VUDU have? |
| It has a radio frequency, or RF, remote. This means you don’t have to point the remote at the VUDU box for it to work. It has a range of at least 22 feet. It has so few buttons and is so easy to use, you’ll find you can use it in the dark. |
| |
How do I determine my Internet connection speed? |
| From any page on VUDU’s website, you can access our free bandwidth test. It will measure the speed of your Internet connection and tell you if you’re ready for VUDU or whether you would need an upgrade to support the service. Please remember to take the bandwidth test from the same Internet connection your VUDU box will use. |

I see a lot of activity on my network since installing my VUDU box. What is going on with my network? |
| The VUDU box needs a constant network connection to give you the latest choice of movies. When the box is idle, you will still see network activity on the box because it is downloading the latest catalog and software updates to bring you the latest in movie releases. |
| |
How do I install my VUDU device? |
| Please refer to the Quick-start Guide, included in the packaging of the box, or the User Guide, available and downloadable from our website: http://www.vudu.com/termsofservice.html. |
| |
Can I use my universal remote to control my VUDU box? |
| No. Because of the VUDU remote’s unique design and because it is an RF remote, which gives it exceptional range without requiring a line of sight with the box, only your VUDU remote can control navigation on your VUDU box. |
| |
How do I report a glitch or quirk of the service that I think should be addressed? |
| In the near future, you will be able to “file bugs” through the Community Page of our website. This is a way for you to give us feedback about existing features and operation of the VUDU service or features you would like to see added in the future. In the meantime, we would encourage you to join the discussion about VUDU through our forums (also found on the Community Page) or please don’t hesitate to send us an email at comments@vudu.com. |

How do I use the VUDU remote control? |
| One of the best features of the VUDU remote control is how comfortably it fits into your pointer. Once nestled there, the buttons and the scroll wheel are within easy, intuitive reach. The VUDU remote’s design was inspired by surgical instruments used by cardiologists in low-light situations. No more trying to find buttons in the dark. The remote has just five buttons: the Scroll Wheel allows you to move around the UI (user interface . . . . Your TV screen). The Back Arrow Button moves you to the last screen you were in. The Home Button takes you to the VUDU Home Screen. The Play/Pause Button initiates or stops play of movies and previews. Finally, the More Button is inactive at this time, but will deliver new features in the future. |
| |
Why does the VUDU box say it needs a software update? |
The VUDU box needs to stay up to date to make sure that you have the latest movies available to rent and purchase. This is done with a software update. You may periodically see a screen that says your box is being updated and during this time, you will not be able to interact with the box with the remote. This process should only last between 5-10 minutes.
Please note that you will only see this message when the box is idle. This will not occur when you are actively using your box.
